Caravan: audio-visual tour of remote Nepal

July 23rd, 2009

Being away from Nepal is the price many of us have chosen to pay for the sake of better education and career. We miss Nepal; it is plain old nostalgia. The good news is that the world is shrinking and it is getting easier to be in touch with Nepal. We do that by watching ‘तितो सत्य’ at nepal123.com, watching Nepali Music videos in YouTube or by following latest development in blogs and web-sites.

I recently found that Netflix, a US based movie renting service, had Caravan (the movie Himalaya by Eric Valli was known by the name Caravan in Nepal) available for renting. I had watched that movie in the old Jai Nepal theater the year it was nominated for Oscar in the ‘Foreign Language’ category. I was impressed by the breath-taking visuals from Dolpa and by the work the team had put together. When I found that I could watch it again, I did that without second thoughts.

A glimpse of the mountain

A glimpse of the mountain

It was like a short visit to Nepal that filled me with joy. The movie impressed me equally this time. I recommend that you view it if you have not viewed it already. If you are not a Netflix subscriber, you can subscribe to their 15 day free-trial and watch the movie (and several others like Slumdog Millionaire) at no cost. Click on the image below to rent the DVD from Netflix. If you are not an existing customer, you will be asked to join the free trial in the following page. I am sure you will enjoy the movie!

What does opening of KFC and Pizza Hut in Nepal imply?

June 6th, 2009

If you haven’t heard about KFC and Pizza Hut opening in Kathmandu yet then that’s one old news already. You can see the interview with the Nepal Unit Manager of the company in eKantipur.com here. The news has already created a buzz in the Nepalese community as can be seen here, here and here. If things go as planned, Kathmanduites will be able to try KFC and Pizza Hut by September 2009.

Investors have been complaining for long that Nepal does not have a suitable environment for investments. With political instability still looming, what does the decision to open two well known fast food chains in Kathmandu imply? Are the investors hopeful about stability or is it that the fast-food industry thrives even during tough times.

Also, KFC and Pizza Hut both have a knack among the youth but still they would have to face tough competition from local favorites like mo:mo. Will these new chains be able to win Nepalese hearts despite declining popularity worldwide due to health issues? In any case, the introduction of international fast-food chains in Nepal would change the fast-food industry for sure. What exactly would be its impact is something we need to wait and watch.
