Save Money on Your Monthly Cellphone Bills (US only)

April 29th, 2009 1 comment

Before I begin the actual post, let me mention something that I have been wanting to share with you. The way we want Rangeen Chara to be known is as a platform for Nepalese around the world to share valuable information. We will build web-services, maintain the site and advertise Rangeen Chara so that there are people who publish the content and there are people who use the benefit from the published information. We are still months away from fully achieving this but I request you all to share your ideas and information that you think would be useful for the Rangeen Chara community. Something that is trivial for you could be extremely valuable for someone else so don’t hesitate to write down and to send it our way.

If you have a cellphone in the US, chances are that you are eligible for discounts that the service providers (AT&T and T-Mobile for example) offer but don’t want you to know. These discounts are the tools they use to attract customers from large organizations like Universities. If the organization you are currently associated with as a student or an employee is participating in the program then you can save between 10-20% in your monthly bills. Below I am providing you with details to see if you are eligible for such discounts and if you do how you can participate for two major service providers: AT&T and T-Mobile. You can search the Internet if your service provider has other similar programs.

AT&T FAN Discount
To see whether you qualify for the discount, click here. In the page, enter your e-mail address in the text-box with the instruction:Find Out if You Qualify For Employee Discounts. If you qualify, you will see a message as shown in figure below and the details about the discount is sent to your e-mail.

Click on the link sent to you in the e-mail and in the page that opens up, click on discount registration under discount qualifications and follow the instructions.

T-mobile Discount
Getting 15% student discount on your bill is quite simple, just call T-Mobile customer support and ask for it, walk into a T-Mobile store and ask or use their online chat. This discount is for university students, faculty, employees and alumni but it does not hold true for all schools, just those schools signed up with T-Mobile. It appears that T-Mobile is verifying a relationship with a school simply via having a school email address, so the verification process isn’t particularly rigorous. Only few Universities are participating and to see whether your school is participating, see this article.

Another way to get a 12% student discount if your school is not signed up with T-Mobile is to have a Student Advantage Card. It costs $20 to sign up for, but is worth the cost as you will save more than hundred dollars in a year. The card can also be used for various other discounts such as with Amtrak and Jet Blue.

If you are not a student but work for an employer then visit this site to see if you qualify for discount.

Other Carriers

Verizon Wireless: Enter your work email address to see if you qualify for discounts. Verizon Wireless will send you an email that will help you determine your eligibility for promotional rates (personal email addresses not accepted).
Sprint Sprint: has business agreements with hundreds of corporations and government agencies to offer wireless products and services at a significant discount when purchased online or over the phone.

I hope that you will be able to save money using this information. If any of you living outside US know about similar deals from your cellphone provider, please share it with us.

Facebook users now get easy access to FreeSMS

April 22nd, 2009 7 comments

I have been posting a lot about FreeSMS lately. In fact, we have been working a lot on it! This one should be a good news for many of you who did not like the phone-registration process. Starting from today, users signing in to Rangeen Chara using Facebook connect can send SMS without registering their phone number with us. The driving factor behind this step is our decision to accept Facebook Id as a proof of identity. We will be sending Facebook Id along with the SMS message so that recipients can figure out the sender of the message if they desire. Users who have an account with us can still use their Facebook account information to log in and send SMS without registering the phone number. Members without Facebook account still need to register their phone number to be able to send SMS.

The number of registered users crossed 400 today. There are many users new to FreeSMS and here is a short introduction to FreeSMS for them:

  • FreeSMS is a service using which you can send SMS to Nepal for free. You can send SMS to both Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Mero Mobile.
  • New users can send up to 5 SMS each day during the first month.
  • After one month, members can send 2 SMS each day.
  • At any time, members can upgrade to Premium account and send up to 10 SMS per day.
  • Premium Account holders can send longer messages compared to basic members.
  • Facebook users can use their account information and start sending SMS to Nepal for free without registration.
  • Members who do not have Facebook account need to create an account with us and verify their phone number to be able to send SMS.

We are thankful to our members for loving FreeSMS and for providing valuable feedback!

Upgrading to FreeSMS Premium Account using Trialpay

April 16th, 2009 Comments off

Let me start by thanking those of you who have successfully upgraded to FreeSMS Premium Account without spending anything. This post is for those who want to upgrade to the Premium Account but are not familiar with the process and have doubts about it.

We came up with the idea of free upgrade to allow you to send up to 10 SMS a day without significantly increasing the expenses on our side. We found that with Trialpay.com system, it was possible. What Trialpay does is that it contacts different advertisers who are looking for customers to try their products. So when visitors like you want some service for free, you can go to Trialpay.com and participate in the advertiser’s offers. The advertiser then pays certain amount to the web-site that brought the customers to their page (in this case Rangeen Chara). I like this system because every one benefits: the advertisers get customers, you get Premium Account for free and Rangeen Chara receives some money to reduce the expenses. We are spending about a hundred dollars a month on FreeSMS! By upgrading to Premium Account, you are helping us reduce the expense.

To upgrade, you can start by clicking on the get it free button below:

Once you click on the above link, you will be asked to enter your name and e-mail address. You will be sent the product activation code in this e-mail address when the process is completed. Once you submit this information, you will arrive at a page that displays a number of offers that are available in your country. You can browse through different offers and choose one offer that works best for you.

Here are some ideas for selecting good Trialpay offers:
1. Some offers take longer to complete while others confirm immediately. For example, if you applied for a credit card, your offer would not be complete unless your credit application is not approved. Trialpay mentions how long does an offer take to confirm and thus it is better to choose offers that Confirm Instantly. There is an option to display only the instant offers.

2. Some offers require purchase while others are Free. For example, you need to send flowers worth $10 to someone to get FreeSMS in one of the offers. But there are many offers that are free. Example: if you try Credit Report offers for a week, you won’t be charged anything at all as long as you cancel your subscription within a week. You will know your credit score for free and get upgraded at the same time!

3. Offers vary by country. For example while there are several free offers in US, there might be very few in Korea. In any country, it is better to participate in one of the Most Popular offers displayed by Trialpay unless you find something else that interests you.

Once the offer is complete, Trialpay.com sends an e-mail to you with a link to the page where you will find the FreeSMS Premium account activation code.

In the US, here are some good offers that confirm instantly:
a. FreeCreditReport.com : 7-day trial to Triple Advantage Credit Monitoring
b. RealPlayer SuperPass : Sign up for SuperPass today and get a FREE 14 Day Trial!
c. CreditCheckTotal : Sign up today to receive a 7 day free trial to CreditCheckTotal

Please help us by upgrading to FreeSMS premium account. If you have successfully upgraded to the premium account, please help other members in your country by sharing the offers that you completed.
