Only users with Facebook account were able to join this communtiy during this period. We saw far less new members joining this community recently and found that the registration page displayed a message that new registrations were disabled. That was unintentional. Apparently, some options had been changed in the settings that caused the registration to be disabled.

We know that new memberships are often due to recommendations from our existing members. If you recommended your friends and family in past and they were not able to join, please let them know that the registration is back again.

With only 49 days remaining for FIFA world Cup 2010, the world cup fever has started to spread among people. Many web sites and blogs now have some coverage of the world’s biggest sports event; being held in South Africa this year from 11 June to 11 July. A lot has changed since the last world-cup when it comes to peoples life-style, Facebook was in its infancy and Twitter wasn’t even born!

Football being one of the most popular sports in Nepal, we decided to do something to engage our members this year. We have built a Facebook app using which you can see the teams that are likely to play with each other and based on that choose your World Cup 2010 winner. This kind of application is commonly called a Bracket App or a Tie-Sheet App.

You begin by choosing the winners and runners-up for the group matches and then proceed to bracket games all the way to the Finals. The application shares your selection for the World-Cup winner via your Facebook Wall. You can also invite your friends to try the application after you share your selection. We are glad to inform FreeSMS users that we have developed a mobile friendly version of FreeSMS page. The existing FreeSMS page is customized for access via computers; it loads a lot of items that are not required for the SMS functionality. As mobile phones have much lower bandwidth in most cases, the existing FreeSMS page loads slowly.

The mobile friendly FreeSMS can now be accessed at: http://www.rangeenchara.com/mobile. Using this page, you can now send SMS to Nepal right from your cellphone no matter where you are (given that you have Internet service enabled in your cell-phone).

The mobile phone friendly page uses XHTML Mobile standard and detects whether the page is loaded in a mobile browser or not. If the page is accessed from a computer, the page redirects to the current FreeSMS page.

The mobile version requires you to use Rangeen Chara login as it does not support Facebook login. Those of you who have been using Facebook login will now need to create Rangeen Chara account and verify their account to use this service.

We hope that this will make FreeSMS even more useful to the community.
